# Roles

Access to site functionality is based on user roles. Each role grants a discrete set of permissions, and a user can hold several roles at once — roles are additive. Most people who work on content will have **Author**, and those who sign content off will have **Author** and **Approver**.

| [Authenticated](/convivial-for-govcms/roles/authenticated-users.md)      | Every logged-in user. Gives access to the user profile and the admin toolbar.                               |
| [Author](/convivial-for-govcms/roles/authors.md)                         | Create and edit all content and media, manage menus and redirects, send content for review. Cannot publish. |
| [Approver](/convivial-for-govcms/roles/approvers.md)                     | Publish, archive and restore content, and revert to earlier revisions.                                      |
| [Structure](/convivial-for-govcms/roles/structure.md)                    | Manage taxonomy terms and custom blocks.                                                                    |
| [Manager](/convivial-for-govcms/roles/managers.md)                       | Add, edit and block users and assign roles.                                                                 |
| [Webform manager](/convivial-for-govcms/roles/webform-managers.md)       | Build and configure webforms. Cannot see submissions.                                                       |

Each role has its own chapter below, with examples from the demo site, <https://govcms.convivial.io/>. To see which roles you have, open your account menu in the toolbar (your username) and choose **Edit profile** — your roles are listed under **Roles** but can only be changed by a Manager.
