Editing a page

Open a page and choose Edit in the tabs under its title, or use Edit from the content list. The form has a main column split into Content and Metadata tabs, and a sidebar for publishing, menu and URL settings. All content types share the same layout, so once you know the Page form you know them all.

The edit form

Content tab

Title (required) — the page heading, used in the browser tab, menus, breadcrumbs and search results.

Last updated — shown to visitors. Set it when you make a substantive change; leave it alone for typo fixes.

Description (required) — one or two sentences shown in teasers, cards and search results, and used as the meta description. Write it for someone deciding whether to click.

Thumbnail — the image used when the page appears in a card or list. Choose an existing image with Add media or upload a new one.

Icon — the name of a Phosphor icon, e.g. file. Used in some list styles; see Icons.

Header — collapsed by default. Open it to control the banner at the top of the page.

See a customised header on the demo site: https://govcms.convivial.io/demo/content/test-fancy-header

The Header group
  • Introduction — a short lead paragraph shown in the header, larger than body text.

  • Banner palette — the colour scheme for the banner: Standard, Alternate, Primary, Secondary, Accent or Neutral. See Palettes.

  • Banner title — overrides the page title in the banner only.

  • Banner image — a content image displayed beside the title.

  • Banner background and Banner background pan and zoom — a full-width background image with an optional slow animation. Use either a banner image or a background, not both.

  • Featured title and Featured links — a short list of links shown in the banner, for the two or three things most visitors come for.

On this page — set to Standard to show a table of contents built from the page's headings. See On this page.

Content — the main body. See WYSIWYG.

Components — structured blocks placed below the body. See Components.

Attachments — documents for download, listed at the end of the page.

Metadata tab

The Metadata tab

These fields are optional but improve findability and let the site report on its content:

  • Review by — the date the content should be checked. Drives the review lists on the user dashboard.

  • Owner — the business unit responsible for the page.

  • Stage, Goal, Intent, Intents satisfied — classification used by personalisation and analytics. Follow your site's content model; leave empty if unsure.

  • Same as — a URL that identifies the subject of the page (e.g. a Wikipedia page). Helps search engines and AI assistants understand the content.

  • Type — a Schema.org page type. Set to FAQPage for FAQ pages; otherwise leave empty.

The sidebar

Revision log message — a short note on what you changed. It appears in the revision history, so write it for a colleague looking back in six months.

Current state / Change to — the editorial workflow. See Workflow.

Menu settings, URL alias, URL redirects and Meta tags are covered below.

Hide — hides parts of the page layout: Header, Breadcrumb, Heading, Introduction, Sidebar, Meta, Properties, Container, Print and Listen. Useful for landing pages built entirely from components. See Hiding content.

Search exclude and Simple XML sitemap — leave at their defaults unless the page should not be discoverable. See Excluding from search.

Preview and save

Preview shows the page as visitors will see it without saving. Save stores a new revision in the state chosen under Change to. Saving never publishes on its own.

Embed media

To place an image, document or video inside the Content field, put the cursor where it should go and click Insert Media in the editor toolbar.

The Insert Media button

The media library opens. Use the tabs on the left to switch between Image, Document, Remote video and the other types, search or filter, tick the item and click Insert selected. The Add file field at the top of each tab uploads a new item without leaving the page; the Remote video tab accepts a YouTube or Vimeo URL.

The media library

Once inserted, click the image to choose its alignment and whether to show a caption.

Open Menu settings in the sidebar, tick Provide a menu link, and choose a Parent link. The URL alias is generated from the menu position, so set the parent before saving for the first time.

Menu settings

To reorder or restructure the whole menu, see Navigation.

Meta tags

The important meta tags — title, description, image — are generated automatically from the Title, Description and Thumbnail, so make sure every page has a Description. Open Meta tags in the sidebar only when a page needs a specific override.

Meta tags

URL alias

Addresses are generated automatically from the title and menu position, e.g. /services/permits/apply. To set a specific address, open URL alias in the sidebar, untick Generate automatic URL alias and type it. Keep addresses lowercase, with hyphens between words.

URL alias

Changing a page's title or moving it in the menu changes its address. The old address is not redirected automatically — add a redirect so existing links keep working.

URL redirects

To send an old or short address to a page, open URL redirects in the page's sidebar and add the path.

URL redirects on the page form

To manage every redirect on the site go to Manage → Configuration → Search and metadata → URL redirects (/admin/config/search/redirect).

Managing redirects

Click Add redirect, enter the Path to redirect from and the page or URL to redirect To. For an external destination include the full address with https://.

Adding a redirect

Add a redirect whenever you archive a page that others may have linked to, pointing it at the closest replacement.

Revisions

Every save creates a revision. Open Revisions in the tabs under the page title to see the history with each revision log message. Compare shows the difference between two revisions; Revert (Approvers) makes an earlier revision the current one — as a new revision, so nothing is lost.

Delete content

Authors and Approvers cannot delete content. Prefer archiving (see Workflow): an archived page can be restored, and its address can be redirected. If a page must be deleted, ask a Site administrator — the Delete action is under More actions on the edit form.
