# On this page

Set **On this page** to *Standard* in a page's Content tab and a table of contents appears in the page's sidebar, listing the headings and linking to each; the entry for the section currently on screen is highlighted as the visitor scrolls.

The list is built automatically from the page's headings — the H2 and H3 headings in the **Content** field and the **Heading** of each component — so it is only as good as the headings:

* Only *Heading 2* headings are listed, so use them for the sections you want in the list and *Heading 3* for sub-sections; never *Heading 1*, which is the page title. See [WYSIWYG](/convivial-for-govcms/content-editing/wysiwyg.md).
* Give every component a **Heading**. A component with **Hide heading** ticked still appears in the list; one with no heading does not, and its content becomes a gap in the outline.
* Keep headings short and specific. They are read out of context in the list, so *Fees* beats *Here is what you will need to pay*.

Use it on long pages — guides, policies, anything a visitor arrives at looking for one section. On a short page or a landing page built from components, leave it off; a table of contents with two entries is noise. A page with no Heading 2 headings shows an empty list, which looks like a mistake.
